Why We Don’t Disclose Prices Before an Estate Sale
One of the most common questions we get before an estate sale is, “How much is this item?” And while we understand the curiosity, we have a firm policy: we do not disclose prices before the sale (especially in a public post). Here’s why:
1️⃣ Pricing is subjective. What one person considers a fair price, another might find too high—or too low. Our job is to attract as many people as possible through the doors. If someone sees a price ahead of time and assumes everything is “too expensive,” they may not even show up—potentially missing out on a great deal.
2️⃣ Estate sales are extensive. Many sales contain hundreds, even thousands, of items. Expecting anyone to recall the exact price of each item is simply unrealistic.
3️⃣ We work as a team. Different team members handle different areas of pricing. This means one person may not know what another has priced, and giving an inaccurate number can cause confusion.
4️⃣ Pricing inquiries don’t always lead to attendance. In our experience, many people who ask about prices beforehand don’t always end up attending the sale. We encourage everyone to visit in person to see the full selection, as estate sales are often full of unexpected treasures.
5️⃣ We are on a tight schedule. In the days leading up to a sale, we are staging, cleaning, photographing, advertising, mitigating safety concerns, and handling back-office administrative duties. Answering pricing questions takes time away from ensuring the sale is set up properly and providing the best experience for both our customers and clients.
Our best advice? Come to the sale! The thrill of the hunt, the chance to see everything in person, and the opportunity to negotiate—all of this makes the estate sale experience unique and rewarding.
